Pigs are animals that are domesticated by man for his consumption. They are also
known as hogs or swine. Male pigs of any age are called boars, female pigs are
called sows. They are found in almost everywhere around the world and they
provide valuable products to humans, including pork, lard, leather, glue, fertilizer
etc. they are of high economic importance based on the breed they are. They are
resistance to disease and can adapt to any climatic condition. Sows give birth to
litter of young called piglets. A sow can give birth to as much litter as up to 15
piglets and can also reproduce twice in a year. Pigs are omnivorous animals i.e.
they can feed on both flesh and plant. Pig meat is called pork.
Below are the breeds of pigs:
Exotic Breeds
Yorkshire: It is one of the most popular breed of pig that are sort after for meat.
They are often called the white pig with pink skin and white hair. They are very
large and grow very fast. This breed produces large litters and is known to be
good mamas.
Landrace: It is also similar to Yorkshire. It is a large long breed of pig with long
loins. It is known to be of high milk ability and many piglets they give birth to.
They are highly productive and Prolific breeding and efficient in utilizing feed.
Hampshire: Hampshire hogs are noted for being well-muscled and rapid growers,
and for exhibiting good carcass quality when used as meat animals. When used as
breeding stock, the sows of this breed have been praised for its motherly ability.
Duroc: It is originated in America and possesses a high amount of lean muscle that
when they are slaughtered, the carcasses give a higher amount of usable flesh.
Tibetan: This breed of pig is specially adapted to the high hills, cold climate and to
being on pasture all year round. They are small with light body weight. They have
low prolificacy

The Local Indigenous Pigs are: Kolbroek in South Africa, Somo in Mali, Bakosi in
Gabon, West African Dwarf pig in Nigeria, Ashanti Dwarf pig in Ghana, Bush pig
in Togo, Mukota pigs or Zimbabwe Mukota pigs in Zimbabwe.
